YouTube Is Now The Biggest Television Channel In America, And It Is A Campaign Type

Which Changes Who Should Be Running It
Six YouTube Formats, And The Job Each One Is Actually For
| Format | Length and behaviour | Funnel stage | What it is for and where it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skippable in stream | Any length, viewer can skip after five seconds, you pay on view or action | Consideration and conversion | The workhorse. It earns attention rather than assuming it, which means the first five seconds carry the whole campaign. Fails when the hook is a logo |
| Non skippable in stream | Up to fifteen seconds, no skip, paid on impressions | Awareness | Guaranteed delivery of a short message. Fails when used for anything that needs explaining, and it can irritate the audience you are trying to warm |
| Bumper | Six seconds, no skip | Awareness and reminder | One idea, once. Very good for reinforcing a message the audience has already met. Useless as a first introduction |
| In feed video | Appears in search results and alongside related videos, viewer chooses to click | Consideration | Reaches people already looking for something adjacent. Fails on a weak thumbnail and title, which are doing most of the work here |
| Shorts | Vertical, short, in the Shorts feed | Awareness and consideration | Cheap reach, and it needs vertical creative made for it. Fails when a horizontal ad is cropped and shipped |
| Masthead | Homepage placement, reserved and booked | Awareness at scale | A large brand buy with a large minimum. Almost never the right answer for the companies we work with, and we will say so |
Not Sure Which Formats Your Footage Can Support?

What Does A YouTube Ads Agency Do?
It is a different job from YouTube channel management, which is about growing subscribers and organic views through content. Both are called YouTube marketing and they have almost nothing in common. Komplex does the advertising side from Austin, Texas. Search campaigns and wider account structure live on our Google Ads and paid search page, and the same senior lead holds both.

Audience, Format, Build, Read
-
Audience
Who we are trying to reach and how narrow that can get before the audience is too small to serve. Built from search behaviour and your own lists rather than demographics.
-
Format
Which of the six formats the goal and the footage can actually support. If nothing works without filming first, that gets said at this stage rather than after you have paid.
-
Build
Campaigns structured manually, with exclusions, capping, and bidding set at launch. Conversion tracking tested with a real action before spend starts.
-
Read
View rate and completion early, then the measurement standard agreed at the start. If the channel is adding nothing once it has had a fair run, expect us to raise it first.

How We Price YouTube Ads Management
Common Questions About YouTube Advertising
How much do YouTube ads cost?
You pay per view or per thousand impressions depending on the format, and the rate varies enormously by audience and country. Monthly budget is the more useful question than unit cost. A campaign spread too thin never leaves the learning phase and produces data nobody can read. We will tell you where that floor sits for your setup before quoting anything.
What is the minimum budget to run YouTube ads?
Lower than most people assume, and higher than the platform implies. There is no platform minimum, so you can technically start with very little and learn nothing. What matters is running one format, to one audience, for long enough to leave learning and gather enough views to read. We size that at the start rather than letting it drift.
Do I need a video produced before I can run YouTube ads?
Usually not. Most companies have more usable footage than they think: product shots, showroom video, event recordings, webinar clips, customer interviews. We edit what you own into the lengths the formats need. When something new is required, we write the brief and direct a contract video team. We do not shoot footage ourselves.
Is YouTube advertising part of Google Ads or separate?
Part of Google Ads. YouTube campaigns are built in the same account as your search and shopping campaigns, and they share conversion tracking, audience lists, and budgets. That is a practical advantage rather than a technicality, because it means overlap with search gets managed instead of ignored. Our paid search page covers the account side.
Can you edit footage we already have?
Yes, and it is where we would start. Cut existing material into six, fifteen, and thirty second versions, add captions, and make it work with the sound off. That gets a campaign live far faster than commissioning something new. It also tells you whether the channel works before you spend money on production.
What YouTube ad formats exist now?
Skippable in stream, non skippable in stream, bumper, in feed video, Shorts, and Masthead. The old video action campaigns have been folded into Demand Gen, and overlay ads are gone. The format matrix above sets out what each one is for and where each one fails, which matters more than the list itself.
What is Demand Gen and does it replace video campaigns?
Demand Gen is Google’s combined campaign type covering YouTube, Discover, and Gmail placements. It absorbed the old video action campaigns, so for some goals it is now the route rather than a choice. It is a tool we use where it earns a place, alongside manually structured campaigns. It is not our default and we will not describe it as automation doing the work for you.
How do you target on YouTube?
Custom segments built from what people search for, your own customer lists, in market and life event audiences, and specific placements or channels. Broad targeting with strong creative often beats narrow targeting with weak creative, which is counterintuitive and worth testing rather than assuming either way.
How do you measure YouTube results?
View rate and completion in the early weeks, because they tell you whether the creative is working. Then the standard agreed at the start: a brand lift study once there are enough impressions to reach significance, or a geo holdout at smaller spend. View through conversions do not carry our reporting. Ask and we will explain why.
How is this different from growing our YouTube channel?
Completely different work. Channel growth is organic: content, thumbnails, titles, publishing rhythm, subscribers. This is paid media buying, and it does not require you to have a channel with anything on it. Both get called YouTube marketing, which causes a lot of confusion when people are shopping for one and get quoted for the other.
Can we reach people watching YouTube on a television?
Yes, and it is a large share of viewing now. You can target connected television devices inside a video campaign. That changes what the creative should do, since nobody is clicking from a sofa. Our connected TV page covers that in full, including the budget level where it starts to make sense.
Who manages the account?
One senior lead owns the strategy, the build, the creative direction, and the reporting, and stays on the account throughout. Video editing goes to contract specialists we have used for years, under that lead. You will not be handed to someone junior after the first month.
What will you not do?
We will not shoot original footage. We will not run a campaign around a video we think is wrong for the format without saying so first. We also will not quote you a cost per view or a conversion rate. Those belong to somebody else’s campaign until yours has run.
Do you work with companies outside Austin, Texas?
Yes. Komplex is based in Austin with a presence in New York City and Reykjavik, and this work happens remotely by nature. Each country gets its own audiences, its own creative versions, and its own reading. One campaign with a wide geographic target tells you nothing.
