Web Design And Development That Starts With The Decisions
AI Can Build A Website Now. It Still Cannot Decide What The Website Should Say.

What A Prompt Cannot Tell You
Eight Parts Of A Website Build, Ranked By How Much AI Has Already Taken
- 1First Draft Layout. Mostly Taken.
A generator produces a clean, conventional page faster than any human can wireframe one. If your site needs to look like other sites in your category, this is solved.
- 2Component Code. Mostly Taken.
Buttons, forms, grids, and animations come out working. A developer now edits and integrates rather than writing from nothing, which is why builds cost less than they did.
- 3Copy Variants. Largely Taken.
Rewriting a paragraph six ways is quick and cheap. Deciding which of the six is true about your business is not, and the tools have no way to know.
- 4Images And Placeholders. Largely Taken.
Generated imagery has replaced stock for a lot of uses. It has also made a lot of sites look like each other, which is a real cost nobody mentions.
- 5Information Architecture. Partly Taken.
A tool can propose a sitemap from a description. It cannot know that half your traffic lands on one page that is buried four clicks deep.
- 6The Technical Foundation. Barely Taken.
Crawlability, redirects, schema that actually emits, and speed on a real host with real plugins. Generated sites routinely ship broken here and look fine.
- 7Integration Work. Not Taken.
Your CRM, your booking system, your inventory, your payment flow, and the legacy thing nobody wants to touch. This is where builds still fail.
- 8Deciding What The Business Should Say. Not Taken At All.
Which offer leads, which proof carries it, what to leave out. This is the whole job, and no prompt has ever answered it for anyone.
Where Does Your Project Sit On That List?
WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Or Leave It Where It Is
| Platform | Who it suits | What you give up | Who can edit it | What it costs to run |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Content heavy sites, service businesses, anyone who wants to own everything outright | Updates and security fall to you, or to us on a monthly plan | Anyone, once the templates are set up properly | Hosting, a handful of licences, and the care to keep it upright |
| Shopify | Stores that want checkout, payments, and inventory handled and not built | Deep customization gets expensive, and you rent the platform permanently | Your team, for products and content, within the theme's limits | A monthly plan, transaction fees, and the apps that creep in |
| Webflow | Marketing teams at B2B and SaaS companies who want to publish without a developer | CMS limits, thin ecommerce, and hosting you cannot move away from easily | Your marketing team, which is the entire reason people pick it | Monthly, per site, and more than WordPress hosting |
| Leave it where it is | Sites that work, rank, and convert but need three specific things fixed | The satisfaction of a launch, which is worth less than it feels | Whoever edits it now | Almost nothing, which is the point |
Not Sure Which Row You Are In?
What Does A Web Design And Development Agency Do?
A marketing agency that builds websites is a different thing from a design studio. A studio is judged on the work and will usually make a more beautiful site. We are judged on what the site does after launch. Search demand and campaign data decide the structure before any design work begins. Komplex was founded in 2014 and is based in Austin, Texas, with a presence in New York City and Reykjavik.

Decide, Design, Build, Launch, Then Run It
-
Decide
Which pages carry the money, who edits them, what they connect to, and what the site is for. The platform choice comes out of these answers, not before them.
-
Design
Structure first as flat wireframes, then the visual work on top. You see the skeleton and sign off on it before anyone argues about a colour.
-
Build
Templates built to be edited, with crawl, speed, and schema settled while the build happens rather than afterwards.
-
Launch
Redirects ship before the switch. We crawl that same day and test forms and tracking with real submissions.
-
Run It
Care on a monthly plan, or a clean handover to whoever takes it on instead. Both are fine and we will say which we think fits.

How We Price Web Work
Common Questions About Web Design And Development
Why pay an agency when AI can build a website?
Because production is not the expensive part any more. The tools will give you a competent page quickly. They will not tell you which offer to lead with, which four pages carry your revenue, or why your quote form loses people at field seven. If your project is mostly layout and copy variants, use the tools. If it involves integrations, search traffic you cannot afford to lose, or a decision about what the business should say, that is where we come in.
Who actually does the work?
Strategy, structure, copy, search, and the technical decisions come from one senior lead, and that person stays on your account. Design and development come from a small group of freelancers we have worked alongside for years. The same lead manages and reviews their work. There is no design floor behind us. Better you hear that here than work it out later.
Do I own the website when it is finished?
Yes, all of it. The code, the design files, the domain, the hosting account, the platform account, and any licences bought for the project sit in your name. We work through access you can remove at any time. If we part ways, you keep everything and nothing stops working.
How long does a website take to build?
Page count, integrations, and how fast content arrives all decide it. Content is what stalls a project, not the building of it. We quote in stages with a date attached to each stage instead of one date at the end. You can see a project slipping while there is still time to act.
How much does a website cost?
A five page marketing site and a hundred page rebuild with a CRM integration are different jobs, so any published range is close to meaningless. Scope decides it far more than who you hire does. Start with the free audit. The fee that follows is built from your site, not from an average of everyone else’s. If you want a rough sense before committing to anything, tell us what the site has to do and we will talk it through.
WordPress, Shopify, or Webflow. Which should we use?
It comes down to what you are publishing and who has to publish it. WordPress if you want to own everything and have content to manage. Shopify if you are selling and would rather rent the checkout than build one. Webflow for a marketing team that has to publish unaided and can live with the limits. Trade offs are in the table above, and sometimes the honest answer is to keep what you have.
Who writes the content?
Usually us, because waiting on client copy is the most common reason web projects stall. We write the structure and the page copy as part of the build and you approve it. Already have a writer you trust? We supply the structure and the word counts and work around them.
What happens after launch?
Either you take it, or we keep it running on a care plan. Sites decay quietly: plugins fall behind, forms break, an update changes something nobody notices for six weeks. Whichever route you pick, you get the handover documentation and the accounts either way.
Will the site be accessible?
We build to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard and test against it, and that is what any honest agency can promise. Nobody can promise legal compliance or immunity from a claim, and any agency that does is selling you something they do not control. We will also tell you plainly that accessibility overlay widgets do not work and have lost repeatedly in court.
Can we edit the site ourselves?
Yes, and that shapes how the templates get built. A non technical person on your side should manage a new page, a swapped photo, or a price change unaided. We show you how at handover and write it down. If you would rather not, that is what the care plan covers.
What will you not build?
Native mobile apps, custom software, and anything that needs an in house engineering team. We also will not build on a platform we think is wrong for you just because you asked. We will explain why, then do what you decide.
Will a new site hurt our search rankings?
It can, and that is how most redesigns go wrong. The protection is a URL map and a ranking inventory written before the design starts, redirects live before the switch, and a crawl on launch day. Our website redesign page covers how, and the technical SEO page covers the mechanics.
Do you handle hosting?
We pick a host, register it in your name, and manage it monthly if you would like us to. We do not resell hosting, because it puts us between you and your own site for no good reason. Most of our WordPress work sits on Kinsta and we are happy to explain why.
Do you work with companies outside Austin, Texas?
Yes. Komplex is based in Austin with a presence in New York City and Reykjavik, and most web work happens remotely by nature. Sites selling in more than one country get the language and market structure planned at the start rather than bolted on later.
